General Surgeon Specialist

Clinical Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Surgical management of general surgical conditions both in the outpatient department and in the inpatient service.
  • Examine patients and make diagnoses to determine the need for surgery.
  • Review patient medical history and plan the most appropriate procedure or treatment.
  • Evaluate and advise patients on the risk involved with having surgery.
  • Perform surgical procedures to prevent or correct injury, disease, deformities and patient function while adhering to regulatory and ethical protocols.
  • Follow established surgical techniques during surgery.
  • Performance of basic minimally invasive procedures and endoscopy ( gastroscopy and colonoscopy).
  • Prescribe preoperative and postoperative treatment and procedures.
  • Ensure sterility in the operating room, and all equipment and instruments.
  • Direct and coordinate activities of hospital staff for proper patient care.
  • Oversee all treatment prior to and post-surgery and identify potential risks or complications and manage them accordingly.
  • Participates in administrative duties, including monthly census, audits, morbidity and mortality reports.
  • Follows medical practice policies and procedures, including attending all mandatory meetings, minimizing incident reports, using resources efficiently, and practicing medicine in a cost-effective manner.
  • Completes all required documentation accurately, timely, and thoroughly in accordance with department standards and to comply with electronic medical record requirements.
  • Be knowledgeable in the structure of careful handling of all equipment used and to be aware of the need to and report faulty equipment.
  • Coordinates follow up meetings with patients and monitor health condition after surgery or treatment.
  • Provide effective communication between all members of the multidisciplinary team caregivers and families.
  • Maintain the highest regard for patient dignity and observe the precepts of rights for patients.
  • Demonstrate knowledge, skill, and abilities at General Surgical Consultant level.

Administrative Duties & Responsibilities

  • Works in collaboration with other surgical consultants and members of the multidisciplinary team, to develop care pathways, which will ensure that patients receive a high standard of evidence-based care
  • Coordinate General Surgery Specialist care for patients within the General Surgery department and in the Hospital.
  • Liaise with other healthcare professionals both in the hospital and primary care settings.
  • Defines the role of the General Surgeon, within the Hospital, developing appropriate protocols, auditing, and benchmarking the General Surgery service for adult patients
  • Ensure the provision of quality service in line with hospital policy, General Surgery guidelines and other national quality health standards.
  • Manage allocated resources effectively and efficiently. Coordinate and advise on the provision of specialist supplies within budgetary constraints.
  • Collaborates with managers, medical, nursing and other health care professionals within the Hospital with regard to specific departmental and Hospital goals and activities related to adult General Surgery.
  • Promotes open communication, healthy working relationships and shows initiative amongst all hospital staff
  • Reports accidents/incidents, and complaints; and ensures that risk management forms are completed.
  • Plan and execute disease/illness prevention and health promotion programs.
  • Ensures a safe environment for staff and patients.

Requirements:

  • Degree in Medicine recognized in World Directory of Medical School (essential)
  • Completion of 5 years residency training in an accredited General Surgery program (essential)
  • Recognized Medical Professional Board Registration (country of origin & of current place of practice)
  • Fellowship or Sub- specialty completion and certificate (if appropriate)
  • Medical Specialty Board Certification through country of origin & of current place of practice (essential).
  • Current medical/or practice license from country of origin & of current practice (essential).
  • Certificate of good standing from the medical board from country of origin & of current practice (essential).
  • At least 3 years of experience practicing as a General Surgeon (essential).
  • Log-book of cases for the past 3 years (essential).
  • Valid BLS, ACLS and/or ATLS certification
  • Proficient in English writing, reading, listening and speaking skills (essential).
  • Fantastic manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination and visuospatial awareness.
  • Superb organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent decision-making skills and communication.
  • Emotionally resilient with the ability to make patients feel at ease.
  • Good professional ethics and a heart to serve the Cambodian community.
  • Compassionate and good patient relationship & customer service oriented
  • Knowledge of health care administration systems.

Preferred

  • Experience serving a multinational, multiracial population.
  • Fellowship or Experience in Minimal Invasive Surgery
  • Fellowship or Experience in Surgical Critical Care
  • Fellowship or Experience with Colorectal Surgery
  • Experience with Pediatric Surgery
